The Distance Between Us - Kasie West
7:22 AMIf I only give 3.5/5 to this book, it's definitely not because there was anything bad with it. Actually, it's quite the contrary. I think that story-wise and writing-wise, this book was perfect. It's the type of book I would like to write one day, but it was a very young book, and slightly a bit immature.
Let me explain myself better. This book is targeted towards teens and young adults, but even if the characters are seventeen years old, I think the book is more appropriate for younger teens. It's cute and simple. But when money becomes a problem in a couple that's not even old enough to fully understand the value of money, you know there's a bit of a problem.
Still, the story gravitates around Caymen, a seventeen-year-old public school student who works in a doll store with her mom. She befriends the girl from the store next door, an older teen with a boyfriend who's in a band, and she becomes close to an old woman who comes every once in a while to order expensive dolls.
One day, however, the woman sends her grandson to pick up a doll. Alex, she says his name is, but when he comes by, he presents himself as Xander, so Caymen doesn't make the connection. He's rich – a lot more than she is – and goes to the local private school. And while his parents approve of her, Caymen knows her mom wouldn't approve of him, so she pretends to be dating another boy from the band who kind of has a crush on her.
The story is very well-written in a simple way. It reflects the characters' emotions and there's no unfinished business at the end of the book. It's complete and perfect in a stand alone, but the fact that her mom hides money problems from Caymen, and when Caymen tries to help, her mom says no, is all a bit immature. It's also very immature from her mom to not want Caymen to date a guy just because he has a bit more money. They're not thirty, they're seventeen.
And Caymen is immature in her own way, and unfortunately, because you know so much about the money and schooling differences, it could definitely be blamed on a lower education, even if I doubt it was the author's goal.
Overall, I do recommend the novel if you're looking for a young, quick page-turner, but if you usually like novels with a bit more thriller and romance, this one isn't for you.
