Art & Soul - Brittainy C. Cherry

I have a very strong love/hate relationship with this book, which I will soon explain why, but if we took out the part that I hate, the book wouldn't be nearly as good as it is.
Aria is sixteen years old. At the end of sophomore year, she sleeps with her brother's best friend and falls pregnant. Her mom is disappointed, her dad starts hating her, her brother doesn't suspect a thing, her younger sister calls her fat and ugly, and her baby sister is too young to even understand what's going on. All she knows is to be sad when her dad walks out on the family. She's Art.
Levi is seventeen years old and has a charming southern accent from Alabama. His mom is schizophrenic and sends him for a year to his dad's while she gets help. What Levi doesn't now when he gets to Wisconsin is that his dad has terminal lung cancer and that he was sent there to say goodbye. He's Soul.
Art and Soul meet at school when they're teamed together for an art and music project. Aria is an artist and Levi is a violinist, and together, they form a band of air guitarists, with the collaboration of Aria's best friend Simon, until their world falls apart. Aria has to give up the baby for adoption, Levi's dad dies and Simon's parents are moving to Washington with Aria's baby.
The part I hated is the fact that Aria is pregnant. While I do know that the novel wouldn't have the same meaning if she wasn't, it's still too much of a teenage novel classic to have the girl pregnant, and at the beginning, it kind of annoyed me.
Thankfully, you quickly forget that she's pregnant because it's not the focus of the book. Other than some parts where she says the baby is the size of an avocado or a mango, the story floats around Aria's family and friends (Simon and Abigail), and Levi's family (his dad, mom and uncle). Once again, it's another beautifully written story, but that's a classic for Brittainy C. Cherry.
If it wasn't for the fact that Aria is pregnant, I would probably give this book a good 4.5/5, but right now I'm in between a 3.5 and 4. It's totally worth the read just because of the story, and I recommend it to anyone who likes classic teen/young adult books.
