My Clarisonic Experience

7:19 PM

The famous Clarisonic. You may have heard of it on Youtube, at your local Sephora store, or on television. It is supposedly magic for the skin, and it is known to help with acne, wrinkles, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and a bunch of other skin issues. But considering that it costs around $200 (I have the Mia 3 and it currently retails at CA$230), not everyone can afford getting one at the risk of not experiencing any results. Today, I'll review my experience with the Clarisonic, how I use it, and whether I like it or not.

The Clarisonic

First of all, let's start with the Clarisonic itself. The device is a very sturdy handle on which you attach different brush attachments. The brush, unlike the cheaper battery-operated devices you can find at the drugstore, does not spin. It pulsates back and forth, oscillating at a sonic frequency, and producing 300 movements per second. It removes dirt, oil, and impurities six times better than hands.

The Clarisonic comes with a sensitive brush head, but you can purchase separately different ones, such as one for normal skin, one to deep cleanse the pores, one for acne, etc. They all have different functions, and they should be changed every three months. Although the fibers are hypoallergenic and antibacterial, the brush head can carry bacteria if it isn't changed every three months and rinsed thoroughly after each use.

The device has an integrated timer and, in some cases, different speeds. 20 seconds should be spent in a circular motion on the forehead, another 20 seconds on the nose and chin, and then 10 seconds on each cheek. It can be used up to twice a day depending on the brush you're using.

My experience

I have been using the Clarisonic for a week, so I have yet to experience the purging phase that everyone talks about. It's the phase where your skin cleanses itself by pushing all the dirt and impurities to the surface of the skin, often causing pimples.

I have used the Clarisonic every day, twice a day, for a whole week. Since I had active breakouts all over my chin at the time I started, I decided that I would exfoliate a little bit more to help clear the cysts. Therefore, I use the normal skin brush in the morning and the deep pore cleansing one at night. Because I don't have sensitive skin, neither of these brushes cause redness or irritation, and I am able to go through two runs (20-20-10-10-20-20-10-10) morning and night. The sensitive brush head is too gentle for my skin.

Note that I also haven't tried the cleanser that comes with the Clarisonic. I use my Clean&Clear cleanser with salisylic acid, as well as my Boscia purifying cleansing gel. I will leave a list of my skincare regimen at the end of the review.

The first three days I used it, I saw absolutely no difference on my skin. I was hoping to see results right away because of all the claims online, but I didn't. Of course, I was slightly disappointed. The fifth day, I looked in the mirror and found absolutely no blackheads on my nose (which I usually have to extract every other day), and the cysts on my chin had significantly diminished. I actually don't even have any active breakout right now!

Like I said, I have only been using the Clarisonic for seven days, which means that these results could change and I could eventually go through the purging phase. I also haven't noticed any difference in my hyperpigmentation and acne scarring, which I hope will change over time. But so far, I am extremely pleased with the results, especially considering that I haven't had to extract blackheads in a week!

If you ever consider buying the Clarisonic, I recommend getting it from the Clarisonic website itself. The website offers a 90-day satisfaction guarantee warranty, which means that you can return the Clarisonic anytime within the 90-day trial if you are not satisfied, and you can your money back. Sephora only offers a 30-day trial, and other websites like Amazon or Ebay don't offer any guarantee, even when they claim to.
