When It Rains - Lisa De Jong

A classic broken girl meets hot, dangerous boy kind of novel, except that she doesn't end up with the bad boy! Oh well! I'm probably being too strict on my ratings, but I still love the book.
Kate has always been in love with her neighbor and best friend, Beau Bennett, until she's raped at a party in the middle of a very bad thunderstorm. Since that day, she's been scared of rain and thunder, and she's been pushing her best friend away even if it's obvious he wants something more serious with her.
Then, when Beau is gone to college and Kate is at work, Asher Hunt arrives in town. Beautiful, broken, and dangerous, he sweeps her off her feet and shows her what life is all about. She finds comfort in him and tells him her deepest secrets, and surprisingly, he accepts her for who she is. She eventually realizes that if he can accept her in her broken state, why wouldn't Beau?
I think you've guessed that she ends up with Beau, even if he's absent for over eighty percent of the book. It was very interesting the way Lisa De Jong wrote a love story with a character who's barely there. It could've been a very bad miss, but she did good. What does make me rate this book only three on five, however, is the dialogue.
The characters talk, but the true feelings are in Kate's head and not in what she says. Sometimes I even wondered how Asher could understand how she felt because she wasn't expressing herself properly. The dialogues were poorly developed and not realistic at all, which made the whole story a little bit awkward to read.
Overall, I think it was a very quick, interesting read, with a lot of emotions. If you're like me, you might shed a tear or two, but if you're a dialogue freak, then I suggest you avoid this novel completely, because you'll just end up getting angry for nothing. I mean, after all, it's just a book!
