The Reed Brothers series - Tammy Falkner

Oh boy.

I've just finished the two first book of the series, Tall, Tatted and Tempting, and Smart, Sexy and Secretive, which follow the story of one fifth of the Reed Brothers, Logan, and mysterious guitar player, Emily. Let's just say that I'm not exactly sure how to feel or if I should go on with the rest of the series, which follow the rest of the Reed Brothers; Paul, Matt, Sam, and Pete.

Logan has been deaf since the age of thirteen and hasn't spoken a word since. The twenty-one-year-old lives with his four brothers and works as a tattoo artist, and he tends to be a man whore. One day, a girl walks in the tattoo parlor and asks for a very personal tattoo, but Logan decides that he should pull his moves on her. Needless to say, Emily, known as Kit, is not happy, and Logan gets punched straight in the face. It was love at first sight.

Emily is a nineteen-year-old runaway guitar player who busks in the New York subway. She has nowhere to live, less than thirty-two dollars under her name, and desperately wants a tattoo. She might have a bad experience with Logan the first time they meet at the tattoo shop, but when they run into each other again, she has no problem accepting his offer to stay at his place for the night. No sex involved, no strings attached; just a warm shower and a good night's sleep.

Because Emily has severe dyslexia and can't read, Logan decides to use his voice to speak to her. He claims his speaks like a frog, but Emily doesn't care. She still decides to learn sign language to be able to communicate better.

However, plot twist—and I'm sure you didn't see that coming: Emily has a secret. And her secrets comes back to the surface when she wants to save Logan's brother, whose second round of chemo just failed. Matt is going to die of cancer, but Emily has what it takes to save his life.

Okay, so the story isn't bad. I got hooked pretty quickly to the plot because I thought it was very interesting, and also very different from Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover, which also orbits around a deaf male character. The book is told in two points of views, Logan's and Emily's, and the character development for the two was very well done. Logan is portrayed as a very hot, tattooed and pierced blond guy, and I can't help but imagine how hot he must look. If a story itself is enough for you to love a book, go for it, because I'd read it again and again.

HOWEVER, and I write it in caps because there are other things to consider, the writing is absolutely awful. Both books are full of typos, bad punctuation, and horrendous structure. This was clearly not properly edited, or perhaps not edited at all, and sometimes I had to stop reading, close my eyes, and stop myself from getting angry at how bad this book was written.

Also, when you download the ePub, it says that there are over 310 pages. So you start reading the book and you're all prepared for it to last long, and then bam, it ends at 150 pages. That's because there are two versions in the same file; the sexy version and the lite version. The same happens with the second novel, so don't get too excited when you see the number of pages, and make sure you read the version you want.

Of course, I went for the sexy version, which was very detailed and oh so delicious. However, I did give the lite version a try to see what it looked like, and it was basically as though the author deleted the very detailed parts of the book without adapting the sentences around accordingly. So basically, if you go for this version, one paragraph will start with Logan undressing Emily and will end with Emily asking for a towel to clean herself. No paragraph in between, which is extremely poorly done, in my opinion.

Make sure you consider all of the above before you decide to read this book, because you will either love it or absolutely hate it. If you do hate it, then I sincerely apologize, but if you have the ability to look past mistakes and bad structure, then give this book a try because you won't be disappointed.
